Recognising the growing use of binasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) within the neonatal intensive care setting, the authors set out to explore and characterise the potential effects of using nasal CPAP devices on the neonate.

Mothers' mood and perceptions regarding their preterm infants' behavioral state following a feeding intervention

A 2×3 repeated measures design was used with 22 mother–infant dyads to examine infants' state behavior, mothers' mood and perceptions immediately following and 1 week after a 7-day developmental intervention.

Do we assess 'colour' appropriately using the Apgar score?

The Apgar score is a useful tool which has been used to assess newborn infants' apparent health within midwifery practice. However, the ‘colour’ sign/observation used as part of the Apgar score requires a review because it is not applied appropriately with regard to the physiological changes that occur from fetal to neonatal life.

Sofa sleeping claims 25 babies’ lives

New figures obtained by the cot death charity, the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID), reveal that in the last two years at least 25 babies in the UK have died while sleeping together with an adult on a sofa.
